Rugged and Hardened Industrial Grade Routers for Broadband - Introduction

The REGESTA-PRO are highly intelligent multiservice industrial grade routers that deliver secure and reliable broadband IP connectivity to SCADA telemetry and telecontrol networks. These routers cater to industrial control applications like smart metering, advanced metering, automatic metering, surveillance, monitoring or voice, in critical infrastructure and remote facilities. REGESTA-PRO routers manage industrial processes including Smart Grid control for utility companies (electricity power grid, gas grid, etc.) pipelines and traffic control systems.

Based on the communication technology that has been so successful for Teldat across the globe in mission critical scenarios, Teldat has developed the REGESTA-PRO. This industrial router allows the use of fixed line communication with an ADSL module ot it can also be a cellular 3G (HSUPA/HSDPA/UMTS/ EDGE/GPRS) router. A typical scenario is setting up the REGESTA-PRO as a combined ADSL 3G router, where the ADSL is the main line and 3G is used as backup. However, the REGESTA-PRO can also be used in a scenario having two cellular modules. Both 3G (HSUPA/HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS) modules are, permanently connected to maintain uninterrupted connectivity.

The router has two SIM card slots (dual SIM). In this way, there is always a backup network that can be used by the cellular modules. The router proactively switches the SIM card employed if the communications link becomes degraded (user configurable). This further increases the reliability provided by the interface failover scenarios mentioned above.

Thanks to the integrated Ethernet switch, the REGESTA-PRO is capable of serving a large number of intelligent electronic devices at the remote site without additional equipment. For example, all the utility substations (electricity substations, gas substations and water substations, among others, are prime users of the REGESTA-PRO). This rugged industrial router has an embedded managed switch which includes full support of VLANs and other advanced switching features.

The REGESTA-PRO is ideal for industrial environments, where it can function as an IP SCADA cellular router or IP SCADA ADSL router. Integrating the reliable SCADA protocols used in industrial environments into the advanced networks allowed by the router, empowers utility companies to deploy custom-tailored smart grid solutions. This IP SCADA router is also suitable for industrial applications, which can gratly benefit from its ability to securely transmit critical industrial data over IP protocols.

The REGESTA-PRO hardened router can guarantee optimum performance and maximum security in communications among multiple services in IP networks. The rugged router multiplexes remote site communications using embedded cellular 3G (HSUPA/HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS) broadband or fixed line ADSL links. Maximum reliability communication is guaranteed thanks to a full range of management, supervision and backup functions. Indeed backup is supplied by independent links and using dual SIM on the same internal module or over two different cellular modules.

The Teldat Internetworking Software (CIT*) endows REGESTA-PRO routers with the intelligence required for the efficient implementation of highly secured, scalable and permanently available communications services based on cellular 3G (HSUPA/HSDPA/UMTS/EDGE/GPRS) and ADSL broadband links. Communications cyber-security is supported with state of the art low latency hardware encryption, and the most complete stack of VPN protocols and firewalling techniques. The vast support of business and industrial grade management features in CIT guarantees centralized operation, administration and management of the REGESTA-PRO installed base.

Rugged and Hardened Industrial Grade Routers for Broadband - Application scenario example: Smart Grid Routers

The scenario below shows a meshed VPN or multiservice VPN smart grid network.

This specific application scenario shows a configuration of two broadband cellular 3G (HSUPA/HSDPA/ UMTS/EDGE/GPRS) routers in a power utility environment for smart metering like advanced metering telecontrol, surveillance, monitoring or similar. Each transformer substation has multiple intelligent devices and industrial control equipment managed through SCADA protocols, grouped in the IP subnet and the appropriate VLAN segment, and connected via a serial or Ethernet port to the REGESTA-PRO which acts as a power utility router for all these devices and control equipment.

The router combines the SCADA traffic flow in a VPN tunnel thus guaranteeing maximum security in wireless communications. Additional traffic flows, like smart metering concentration and advanced metering telecontro, or surveillance traffic are routed through additional VPNs. Teldat's central site VPN servers take each flow from the meshed VPN tunnel network and transmit it to the corresponding monitoring station through the central IP subnet and the appropriate VLAN segment.

The REGESTA-PRO industrial router proactively monitors the wireless connection and the meshed VPN tunnels.  When the Teldat hardened router detects unusual degradation in communications or if the tunnel is down, it automatically switches transmission to the backup network and the meshed VPN tunnel thus maintaining constant communication continuity with the remote site.

Rugged and Hardened Industrial Grade Routers for Broadband  - Application scenario example: Utility Company Routers

Using a similar setup as presented in the smart grid scenario, any utility company can benefit from the REGESTA-PRO line of extended temperature routers. They are ideal for use as electricity power grid routers, gas substation routers, water substation routers, control routers, or in general, most industrial environments. These sites will require a router that is capable of sending the SCADA traffic flow from their installed equipment and converting this into IP SCADA to transmit it to a central location via VPN tunnels. Indeed, the REGESTA-PRO is the cellular router or ADSL router indicated for utilities in need of a reliable meshed VPN router.

A utility company will also commonly require, among other points detailed within this product page, two very important aspects on a hardened router, that are available on the REGESTA-PRO:

  1. The router protecs communication from unauthorized access by means of encryption. The encryption in the router has been field-proven over the years in very security-conscious sectors, such as banking.

  2. As for protection against network failures, the REGESTA-PRO offers a range of backup methods, including dual SIM support and a myriad of alternative interfaces in its small size: ADSL connections can be safeguarded by a secondary cellular module. Also, a cellular link can use a second permanently connected module to maintain uninterrupted connectivity.
