Teldat Automotive: All-in-one connectivity for Sevilla buses

The device is a multiservice communications platform for Teldat vehicles. It provides 4G/LTE and Wi-Fi, with redundancy and aggregation options, advanced network security mechanisms and an extended operating temperature range.

Client Summary

Urban transports of Seville Municipal Corporation (TUSSAM) is a public company founded by the Hon. Seville City Council in 1975. TUSSAM is responsible for managing public collective urban transport. It serves a population of more than 700,000 inhabitants spread out over an area spanning 142 km² through a network exceeding 630 km. The fleet consists of 430 buses and 4 trams.

A technological multinational has also been involved in this project. Its mission is to provide citizens with the most advanced solutions in mobility, lighting, energy, security and communications.  


The project starts in 2010 with the replacement of devices in TUSSAM’s trams. At that time, the main challenges faced by the company were to provide a more powerful and comprehensive solution and improve the coverage and quality of existing links.

The decision is therefore taken to install the H1-Automotive router, Teldat’s on-board device that provides connectivity to any type of vehicle, in the tram fleet, giving very satisfactory results.

In 2015, the customer decides to modernize its bus fleet’s communications network. The main reasons that led the customer to want to modernize its entire bus park were the need to:

  • Provide a more powerful, complete solution, which is independent from other services external to the company.
  • Improve link quality and coverage.
  • Unite all services in one communications platform.
  • Find new voice network alternatives. 

The customer already had a number of different on-board solutions – such as SAE and ticketing services. It also had a TETRA radio network for emergency calls to public services (City Council, firefighting, etc.). Integrating all the services in one platform would enhance quality and performance and help TUSSAM cut some of its costs (installation, maintenance, etc.).

Finally, TUSSAM was looking for a solution that would allow it to have the latest in-vehicle technology in order to keep pace with increased demand from communications devices resulting from the steady growth and evolution of its vehicle fleet.

Solution Value

Teldat provides the customer with its own cutting-edge automotive technology for both the 2010 tram project and the 2015 modernization of the bus fleet equipment.

The H1-Automotive router, in the case of the trams, and the newer version, the H1-Automotive+ for the buses, allows the customer to have all its services in one device. Currently, TUSSAM relies on the H2-Automotive+ for new fleet vehicles or replacements.

The Teldat automotive router is a high-performance, rugged IP router that transmits voice, data and video, making it the perfect solution for the customer. Furthermore, as it is specifically designed for mobility environments, the device features vibration, dust and power protection, mobility-specific software, dynamic configurations and delayed shutdown. It also supports extreme temperatures – an advantage in Seville where summer temperatures often reach over 45 °C.

The modernization of the bus fleet equipment allows the customer to update its ticketing system and introduce a new SAE (fleet management tool), using Teldat devices to provide communications to these services and ensure isolation and independence between the communications of both. It also allows the project to scale – thanks to the carrier redundancy options provided by the H2-Automotive+, plans are in place for a second phase to improve coverage and offer passengers on-board Wi-Fi. And let’s not forget that the measures carried out constantly by the device in terms of jitter, packet loss, etc., ensure link quality and guarantee communications in all the solutions.

Furthermore, due to Teldat’s improvements to the on-board communications system, TUSSAM decides to replace the costly TETRA network with Voice over IP (VoIP) calls – ensuring through QoS that voice always has a higher priority.

Why Teldat?

After the success of that first experience with Teldat’s devices in the tram project, TUSSAM was absolutely certain that it wanted to continue to rely on Teldat for the bus fleet modernization project. The trust shown in Teldat by TUSSAM is demonstrated by the 2010 introduction of the first H1-Automotive devices in the first trams, the installation of H1-Automotive+ routers in the bus fleet modernization project, and the use today of H2-Autmotive+ devices for new facilities and replacements.
