Endless Wi-Fi scenarios within the
industrial segment

From simple m-2-m connectivity, to more complex scenarios of Wi-Fi for warehouses with fast moving objects, to the new world of IoT.

Market Overview

Automation within factories and industrial sites is increasing and the operational technology within these sites is becoming more orientated towards Internet. However, connectivity to all the operational machinery cannot be carried out via standard cable networks.

In a factory or industrial site, laying cable can be very difficult and expensive, whilst in some cases it can nearly be impossible due to security standards. Hence this opens the doors for industrial Wi-Fi. Additionally, the expansion of IoT in the following years will also result large increases in the use of industrial Wi-Fi.

Moreover, there are many market segments that cannot be considered industrial, but they do share similar characteristics, such as harsh environmental scenarios.

Teldat has developed an industrial access point for warehouses, factories and similar industrial set ups, on 802.11n, called Teldat API221n. In order to be effective in industrial scenarios, the Teldat-API221n access point has a rugged IP40 class aluminum housing.

This Teldat access point can also use the captive portal Teldat HotSpot by WifiGo, as do other Teldat access points when needed.

Teldat API221n access point works on the Teldat CIT operating system (used by all Teldat routers) for its management system, which is Teldat Cloud NetManager.

    Factories and Operational Technology

  • Factories have an increasing need to have their operational technology to be connected, but wired installations are sometimes not feasible or too expensive. Hence they need Wi-Fi access points that can set up a network in a very harsh environment. In some cases the Wi-Fi will not only be for the machinery itself and the factory control center, but also for non-core issues such as security alarms, cameras, VoIP, etc.
  • Warehouses have constant movement

  • Warehouses are environments which tend to be dirty, dusty and although they are protected from the rain and wind, they can suffer from extreme high or low temperatures. To combat all this, the access points in warehouses need to have special housing. Moreover, the amount of movement of goods and personnel in a warehouse is constant and can be very quick. The Wi-Fi network has to be especially set up to handle this type of scenario.
  • Is it a retail outlet or a warehouse?

  • There is a trend in certain retail outlets in the furniture, DIY and other markets, to be set up as if they are warehouses. They require Wi-Fi, even more than standard warehouse because these retail outlets have the warehouse logistical needs to be met and at the same time they need to satisfy the retail store requirements for Wi-Fi, such as PoS and client demands.
  • Railway and Metro Stations

  • The transport industry, a market with all sorts of Wi-Fi requirements, also needs industry type access points to be placed in different sites. For example railways stations or metro stations will need to coup with the harsh environment of dust, dirt and in many locations a wide temperature range. In these cases, an outdoor device is perhaps too much, but an industrial type access point can be a perfect solution.
