Teldat provides out-of-band management for Telefónica’s network

Teldat provides LTE-based out-of-band management for devices on Telefónica’s MPLS network, giving its operations teams an alternative management path when the primary access link fails.

Industrial LTE device providing out-of-band console access at a Telefónica base station - Teldat Regesta

Client Summary

Telefónica is one of Europe’s largest telecommunications operators and has a long-standing presence in Latin America. Founded in 1924 and headquartered in Madrid, Spain, it provides fixed and mobile connectivity, fiber broadband, pay television, and digital solutions for households, businesses, and the public sector.

Its main markets are Spain, Brazil, Germany, and the United Kingdom, where it operates under brands including Movistar, O2, and Vivo. It is also present in several Spanish-speaking Latin American countries. In Spain, Telefónica provides an out-of-band management service, with Teldat supplying the equipment. Teldat also works with Telefónica in many other areas, serving a wide range of end customers.

LTE out-of-band connectivity for Telefónica network equipment in unattended sites - Teldat

Challenge

Telefónica has equipment deployed across its MPLS backbone and mobile base stations located in unattended exchanges and on the outskirts of cities. This equipment must meet availability SLAs approaching 100%, as an outage could affect thousands of people.

Telefónica’s Operations department needs to be able to manage the equipment remotely when failures prevent access through the standard management channels.

In addition, these locations imposed specific requirements on the equipment. On the one hand, since many of these sites lacked controlled environmental conditions, the devices had to withstand both high and low temperatures. Whereas conventional equipment, designed for climate-controlled environments, do not offer this tolerance.

Moreover, the power supply is not uniform across the different sites, so the devices had to support both alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) power interchangeably. Standard equipment is limited to 220 V AC. Added to this was the need to access the console of the network devices, in order to perform management tasks on the equipment installed both at the base stations and in the MPLS core network.

Telefónica therefore needed devices with asynchronous serial ports that could connect to those consoles, providing an alternative management path for when standard access is unavailable.

Solution

Teldat supplied industrial equipment suitable for uncontrolled temperature environments. They provide mobile LTE connectivity as an alternative to fixed access, together with serial interfaces that connect to the management consoles of Telefónica’s network equipment.

If the fixed connection fails and the equipment can no longer be managed through the primary path, Teldat’s Regesta device provides remote console access over the mobile network.

Regesta devices also offer different power supply variants, both AC and DC, giving Telefónica great flexibility to deploy them in sites with different types of power supply.

The project was carried out in close collaboration with Telefónica’s Network Engineering, Technology, and Operations departments. The teams worked together from the initial identification of the opportunity through testing, service validation, and continuous optimization. Teldat’s expertise in Telefónica’s testing procedures and its ability to meet the security requirements were key to the project’s success.

Teldat’s logistical flexibility made it possible to align production and deliveries with demand and the customer’s schedules, while maintaining an optimized cost for entry-level environments without compromising quality.
