A connected future: IoT, LoRaWAN and the importance of cybersecurity (SIoT)

Feb 29, 2024

LoRaWAN & IoTIn a world where technology is moving ahead at a staggering speed, the Internet of Things like SIoT (Secure Internet of Things) is revolutionizing our present by connecting everyday devices and objects to the web (fostering an unprecedented data exchange and transforming the way in which we interact with the environment around us). In this vast and exciting technological plane, a specific technology has emerged as a key solution to ensure IoT connectivity: LoRaWAN. However, despite these thrilling innovations, there is growing concern about how to keep all the sent data safe.

Imagine a world where your home is fully automated, where the light and temperature automatically match your preferences, your refrigerator lets you know when you’re about to run out of a certain product, and your entertainment devices are seamlessly synchronized. Imagine you don’t have to worry about the quality of the water you are drinking or bathing in. Where waste management is done efficiently, and crops are far more productive (saving water and fertilizers). Such is the potential of the IoT, where smart devices communicate to make our lives more efficient, safe, and convenient.

However, as IoT expands and touches nearly every other aspect of our lives, important challenges arise (especially regarding security). IoT devices, often designed with functionality and connectivity in mind, can be vulnerable to cyberattacks (which have become increasingly frequent with each passing day). Personal data theft and disruptions in essential services are some of the risks associated with IoT technology, and a source of concern for individuals and companies alike.

Understanding LoRaWAN

Here is where LoRaWAN comes into play. It is a wireless telecommunications technology specifically designed for IoT applications. What sets LoRaWAN apart is its capacity to provide long distance connectivity with low energy consumption, making it ideal for IoT devices installed in remote or hard-to access areas.

One of the most notable characteristics of LoRaWAN is its focus on safety. Thanks to its end-to-end encryption, device authentication, and key management services, LoRaWAN tries to mitigate the risks associated to IoT connectivity. In addition, by using non-licensed bandwidths, LoRaWAN offers a profitable and readily-available solution for a wide range of applications (from asset tracking to environmental monitoring).

To deploy a LoRaWAN network, gateways need to interconnect the sensors with a data platform that is capable of smartly monitoring and managing every device.

If we manage to embed cybersecurity in the gateway and add a new layer to encrypted data security, we refer to a new IoT generation: SIoT (Secure Internet of Things).

A safe and connected future

The Internet of Things and LoRaWAN promise an exciting and connected future, where technology improves our lives in ways we cannot even begin to image. However, to make this future a reality, we must start addressing the cybersecurity problems before us.

This new scenario, called SIoT, aims at finding safe and comprehensive solutions for the connectivity of IoT devices. In addition, it is important to have a wide range of products and services specifically designed to meet the connectivity requirements of IoT environments (from routers and gateways to management solutions).

What’s becoming crucial in this sort of environments is the focus on security. Clients are searching for companies that can offer SIoT, but, at the same time, have experience in the fields of telecommunications, cybersecurity, protecting IoT devices and the data they exchange. When advanced security features are integrated in SIoT products (such as next generation firewalls and data encryption), IoT devices remain protected against cyberattacks.
