Client Summary

As Madrid’s mass transit operator, Empresa Municipal de Transportes (EMT) operates 200 routes with an overall length of 3,690 km. The fleet comprises 2,200 buses in and around the city. EMT annually carries 425 million passengers and travels 100 million kilometers. Worldwide EMT is the 6th largest bus transit agency.

The buses in Madrid are the only public transport system available 24hours a day. The network as a whole is undergoing a continuous improvement process with a view to attaining the utmost standards of speed, quality and sustainability. EMT’s commitment is to offer an effective and efficient transport with highest quality.

Challenge

Covering a wide metropolitan area exposed to terrorist threats, Madrid buses EMT looked to increase passenger comfort and security. With the aim of increasing security across their fleet, EMT decided to launch CCTV on the majority of their buses managed and operated from an Alarm Reception Center (ARC).

EMT Buses were already equipped with hardened CPUs to manage intelligent applications integrated in the vehicle including location, fare collection, energy management, audio and information displays either in local mode through the driver’s console or remotely, through the Control Center via its radio trunking network.

To guarantee high resolution, real-time access to the images of the on-board cameras from the ARC, each bus required a permanent broadband connection. As the existing trunking network could not provide sufficient bandwidth, EMT opted for cellular broadband provided by Telefónica. That way progress in migrating to higher speeds with LTE not only guaranteed the needed quality for video surveillance services,but simplified migration to new on-board services.

During the project, it was seen that further benefits for EMT could be gained. Cellular access could enable passenger Wi-Fi, but traffic prioritization was required to ensure that video surveillance and other sensitive data would not be affected by passenger Wi-Fi traffic.

Hence, a very sophisticated router with highly advanced networking possibilities was required. Teldat provided the perfect solution for this project, the H1-Automotive routers.

Solution Value


The project was awarded to the joint venture comprised by ETRA, IECISA and PLETTAC. Teldat supplied the H1-Automotive routers with a ruggedized chassis, an industrial range of electronic components, power feeding protection and installation versatility.

Two cameras with local DVR recording per bus, generate alarms and video surveillance streams for the reception center,where operators can access the bus cameras in real-time. This center also integrates diverse Madrid buses EMT on-board applications due to the integrated H1-Automotive switch (4 ports). VPN features ensure a permanent secure cellular wireless connection with the EMT corporate network. The on-board broadband communications platform delivers 3G, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections locally over the LAN and with cellular wireless communications access over the WAN integrated with EMT’s corporate network managed by Telefónica. The use of standard management technologies allows the integration of the routers inside the EMT Communication Management Platform. The on-board LAN network acts as an extension of the corporate network thanks to tunneling protocols, security policies and other mechanisms which avoid attacks from passengers. Active WWAN supervision mechanisms optimize communications for on-board applications.

The multi-purpose Wi-Fi provides on-route Wi-Fi as an access point, using added-value networking technologies such as bandwidth limitation per user and QoS configuration ensuring the best performance of the above mentioned services.  

Results

Madrid buses EMT began to gradually rollout the solution across its fleet, until it had the whole existing fleet of 2,200 buses networked across the city.

    • Ridership increased on EMT buses and automotive use declined.

    • Passenger’s “peace of mind”/comfort increased to 96.1%.

    • Driver satisfaction significantly increased due to their improved workplace safety.

The mass transit operator in Madrid played a pioneering role. Transit agencies across the world have been looking closely at the EMT model and have adopted or aimed to adopt the solution in other major metropolitan areas.
