Device housing: “Different materials for different environments”

They are outdoors, withstanding inclement weather and widely oscillating temperatures throughout the day and year. They are in industrial environments, where they face demanding and varied requirements. You’ll find them in business and office settings, where they could be on show in the middle of the office, or tucked away in a remote location such as a communications room. They are embedded in road and rail transport vehicles, with specific requirements in terms of vibrations and extreme temperatures. And they are also in households or home office environments, where a friendly presence, aesthetics and ergonomics are of primary interest.

Protecting Telecommunications Devices with an appropriate “housing”

The first thing we see on these devices is their housing, that is, their physical enclosure or exterior shell. This is an outer skin that functions as a barrier against all the above-mentioned environments and scenarios. The quality of these casings must therefore meet all the necessary standards and certification requirements that ensure their efficiency, safe use and correct operation in each work environment.

Fortunately, designers and manufacturers have a wide range of materials (provided by the industry) at their disposal. Whether used alone or in conjunction with one another, these materials are capable of meeting the specific requirements of each work place.

Plastic Versus Aluminium Materials

It is worth mentioning the use of moulded plastic materials in the fabrication of these casings. Such material brings endless aesthetic, morphological and ergonomic possibilities while, at the same time, meeting standards, specifications and industrial certification requirements (sealing, electrical insulation, etc.). The manufacture of extruded aluminium enclosures is also worth a mention, as they provide great allies for embedded devices, which need to dissipate heat and resist vibrations. And mention must also be made of the use of folded metal sheets. When adequately sealed with protective coatings – either through metal baths or industrial paints – these provide the device with just the right combination of durability and aesthetic presence to ensure it works smoothly throughout the technology’s lifespan.

So, innovative hardware and software are not the only things a device needs to be a success. Having the right housing, well-suited to the environment in which it will be installed, is just as important.
