Solution

The control and management of gateway devices are among the key challenges faced in Smart Grid deployments. All Regesta family devices have Teldats advanced internetworking software (CIT), endowed with the most advanced state-of-the-art technologies to cover areas such as the safety of encrypted communications and access control. The combination of advanced networking protocols and management tools like Teldat Cloud Net Manager (CNM), make this router ideal for large-scale deployments.

Cloud Net Manager also provides electricity companies with full visibility of their networks and allows large organizations to simplify the task of managing their communications networks in order to achieve more reliable ones. At the same time, the tool provides a proactive analysis of incidents through alarms, statistical reports and network and application-level traffic monitoring.

Simplicity

Simple provisioning process: plug & play

To simplify Smart Grid network operation, Regesta family routers offer a simple and quick installation and setup process to begin using the gateway devices.

The first step is to install the device. Any operator (this person neednt be an expert) at the site must connect the device to the power source and the solutions other devices. Once plugged in, the device will be ready to work: quick and easy!

The next step involves configuring the device. Teldats solution allows you to create groups and templates to simplify this process. Once the configuration is ready, a simple replication can be done for the installed base and for each new installation.

After configuring the device and plugging it in, nothing more needs to be done and the gateway is ready to work.

Flexible device configuration for Smart Grid deployments

The flexibility of Regesta devices, which allows for a range of power sources and WAN and LAN configurations, facilitates choosing the most appropriate device for each place of installation. These features, together with the in-house hardware design allowing future product evolution and new technology integration, provide benefits for operations management and control.

All Regesta devices include a console port for local troubleshooting. They also provide multiple power source options, a variety of network connections (such as 3G/4G, xDSL or fiber) and several LAN options (including RS232 and RS485 serial interfaces or PLC) to allow various Regesta configurations and provide the best gateway device for each location, while at the same time simplifying management (since they can all be configured and managed from the same management tool).

Reliability

Always connected, even in worst-case scenarios

Smart Grid deployments cannot afford to lose communications between the central point and the geographically-dispersed installed base of gateways. For this reason, Teldat has sort to ensure the communication between all the network devices through several mechanisms.

First, all Regesta family devices are robust hardware devices specifically designed to withstand harsh electrical environments.

At the same time, maximum communications reliability is ensured through multiple access technologies (LTE, Ethernet, fiber or xDSL) together with backup mechanisms, real time traps and SNMP alarms. Multi-carrier fallback has also been implemented to optimize service continuity regardless the communications operator.

Furthermore, the use of hybrid networks allows safely combining several carriers to increase service levels and provides redundancy against third party network errors.

Everything under control: easy management and configuration

Teldat Cloud Net Manager provides the user with full visibility of their network and allows large electricity companies to simplify the task of managing their communications networks. A centralized management system facilitates mass device configuration and streamlines the logistics of implementation and subsequent support. It also cuts down on implementation time and any necessary operator training, thereby reducing costs. Teldats management system allows transparently integrating new services, while providing a scalable infrastructure to update other services. In addition, different users and privileges can be configured, and access to security can be guaranteed thanks to the use of Extended Authentication protocols such as the combination of Radius and TACACS +, encrypted passwords, certificates and the administration of users and credentials.

Implementing thousands of points (many in remote unattended areas) requires a system that provides real-time visibility on the type of traffic being transmitted, coverage status and implemented devices to detect threats, service outages and device reports and service-level performance statistics. All this is possible thanks to Cloud Net Manager, which includes advanced problem solving and administration for simple implementations in environments where the conditions are unknown. And because Regesta family devices are standards-based, they dont include any patented technologies, which means they can be easily integrated into other organizational management solutions.
